Who Is Note Navigator For?
Train your hand and ear one note at a time—
with structured levels, instant feedback, and visual clarity.
Parents
Note Navigator offers a structured, self-paced way for your child to internalize fingerboard positions and connect notation to sound.
It complements lessons or stands on its own for quiet at-home learning.
Each level builds fluency without requiring constant supervision.
Teachers
In private studios or classrooms, Note Navigator reinforces key concepts between sessions—intervals, enharmonics, and string-specific reading.
With defined levels and built-in review, it adapts easily to mixed-skill groups.
Use it as a warm-up, homework, or targeted intervention tool.
Students
Note Navigator doesn’t require lessons or supervision to be effective.
Each level introduces a new set of notes, checks for accuracy in real time, and unlocks the next challenge only when you’re ready.
Great for focused practice between sessions or as a structured alternative to flashcards.
Whether you’re guiding a young student, managing a studio, or practicing on your own, Note Navigator gives structure where it’s most needed—between the fingerboard and the staff.
A Structured Journey to Mastery
With 300 structured levels, Note Navigator builds lasting note fluency on the fingerboard—step by step, level by level.

Progressive Skill Zones
Levels are grouped by fingerboard position, note family, or clef, allowing users to develop familiarity in logical stages—open strings first, then across positions, then into accidentals and compound notes.

Instant Feedback
Users hear correct pitches instantly, allowing them to correct errors before patterns form. This feedback loop replaces guesswork with reliable recall.

Fingerboard Mapping
Each note challenge links directly to its real location on the instrument, training both spatial awareness and musical fluency. No metaphors, no gamified shortcuts—just practical application.

Now Available for Violin
Note Navigator was originally developed for viola and is now also available for violin. Every level is designed to match the real fingerboard layout for the instrument you play. (Cello & Bass versions coming soon)
Every level in Note Navigator builds on the last, creating a practical learning curve that rewards consistency and sharpens spatial-musical awareness with each session.
How It Works
Note Navigator turns note recognition into a learnable, repeatable cycle—each interaction combining spatial placement, visual recognition, and real-time audio feedback.
Step 1: Choose a Level
Start with open strings or targeted note zones. Levels unlock in order, guiding the user step by step.
Step 2: Match the Note
Drag the note below the staff to its correct position on the fingerboard. Immediate feedback keeps the process honest and repeatable.
Step 3: Advance by Mastery
Each correct answer triggers audio confirmation. Progress is earned, not guessed.
Whether you’re warming up or building from scratch, every round strengthens your ability to read and react with precision.
What You’ll Learn
Each level in Note Navigator builds note fluency in clearly defined stages—from string-specific recognition to full-staff mastery.
Apprentice Level
This game begins at the very beginning with associating notes with finger/string combinations and quickly moves to note name identification.
Artisan Level
These levels introduce simple accidentals, first separately, then in combination.
In particular emphasis is placed on the effect accidentals place on natural notes.
Enharmonic fingerings are also introduced here
Adept Level
Here we introduce the complex accidentals of double sharps and double flats. Enharmonic notation is seriously addressed and drilled.
Specific levels demonstrate the movement in placement on the fingerboard of all five possible positions that a note can have
Aficionado Level
For the Violin and Viola these levels introduce 3rd position fingerings by briefly returning to finger/string memorization for note and then returning to note identification.
Once again we review the simple accidentals followed by the complex ones.
The final portion of these levels covers two positions indicated by fingerings above the notes
Treble Clef Extension
(for viola only)
Over 100 levels following the same learning order as the rest to teach violists how to read this troublesome clef
Each level unlocks progressively and reinforces prior knowledge—creating a layered, skill-confirming learning arc from basic to advanced.
FAQ
Have Questions? Let’s Clear Them Up.
- Is this app only for viola players?
Note Navigator was originally developed for viola, but it’s now available for violin as well with versions for the cello and bass soon to follow. Both follow the same core structure, adapted to each instrument’s fingerboard layout.
- Does it teach reading music or just note placement?
It teaches both. Players must identify notes from the staff and connect them to specific positions on the fingerboard. The process develops sight reading alongside spatial awareness.
- Can this be used without a teacher?
Yes. The app is fully self-guided, making it ideal for independent learners, adult returners, or students practicing between lessons. It’s also easy to integrate into studio or group teaching environments.
- How many levels does it include?
There are over 300 levels across four core levels, plus a full treble clef extension set for viola. Each level builds gradually—no timed pressure, no skipped steps.
- Do I need internet or an account to use it?
No. Once the app is installed, it works offline and doesn’t require login or user tracking.
- Why is it a paid app?
Because it’s built by musicians, not advertisers. There are no ads, no subscriptions, and no hidden upgrades—just one price for the complete experience.
